Eliminate Texting & Driving - $2,000 USD Total Compensation

We all know that texting and driving is dangerous and has become a major cause of auto accidents, injuries and deaths. Teens are especially affected by this phenomenon with 97% saying it is dangerous, yet 43% admitting to texting while driving.

Text and Drivin' Elimination through Education

Texting and driving is such a challenging issue because aside from literally video taping a person in their car, a person must be deterred from doing it from their own experience. This is how this idea came about.

Full Description

As I considered this problem and contemplated the situation as to why it is that we all understand that texting and driving is bad, yet continue to do so, it occurred to me that it is because we all have done it so many times and come away unharmed that we feel it is something that doesn’t apply to us… we feel it is only applicable to bad drivers. I also feel that this stems from the idea that texting is the same as talking as the phone; however, talking doesn’t cause you to take your eyes off the road. So, to give drivers a better sense of reality; my idea is that driver’s education programs and high school driving classes/programs incorporate a scenario in which the student drives through a course and must send a text that says “driving call u when I get home”.  The student should drive two courses that differ but have similar objectives…one while sending the text, and one while on a telephone call (or no distraction at all). During each course, the student should face variable turns, distractions and objects resembling animals or humans should be thrown into their path and the reaction time should be recorded to show the driver how much their attention is impacted by what they consider to be a "short text". I believe that once a person sees how much even their driving abilities are impaired when texting, they will understand the extreme potential of danger that is caused by texting and driving. I also recommend that older drivers go through this course when applying to have their license renewed at the DMV.
